Marina Mahathir used to write in a column of The Star named Musings every Wednesday. This article is entitled “Unity an ongoing Malaysian project”. She managed to express critical and creative thinking in her writings. She too able to analysis things all around.

We as Malaysian are responsible for the ongoing unity project called Malaysia, it started on the day we decided to stay together and fight for our independence. 1Malaysia is just a slogan and government introduced this project to emphasis the importance of unity among us. The launch of the program does not mean that we are not unite for the past 52 years of independence. Our country has citizens of different religions, races and social status. We as Malaysian managed to stay together and unite regardless of our differences and some small unwanted incidents.

According to Marina, 1Malaysia concept Unity in Diversity is not something new, it is something we are practicing for years. Unity is not something cant be achieved in days or months. It is developed together with tolerance and ability to understand and accept the differences between us. It might not sound so easy, but it is not something impossible. We are able to prove it but definitely there are still lots of rooms to prove it.

As a conclusion, unity is very important for us as Malaysian to live in peace and harmony; to stay away from war. We should try to avoid the small unwanted incidents which are mainly caused by sensitive issues such as religion. We should respect and understand each other’s religion. Every religion teaches us to be unite as human being and not to criticize other religions. This is how you can be true to your own religion too. We should be proud to be Malaysian and lets work together towards our nation.

This speech was given by Mahatma Gandhi and was recorded at Kingsley Hall, London in 1931. I personally choose him because I feel he never fails to prove that he applied critical thinking in his speeches and writings. Mahatma Gandhi is one of the most respected spiritual and politic leader. He helped to free the Indian people from British rule through nonviolent resistance, and is honored by Indians as the father of the Indian Nation. Gandhi was a lawyer by profession. There has been no other greater advocate of one humanity in One World, and no stronger opponent of violence and war than Gandhi. Basically he practices ahimsa, which means refraining from causing pain to any living creature. This shows that he believed that peaceful means alone could lead to peaceful ends.

According to my research, I found out that both World Peace and One World are inherent in Gandhi's philosophy and the Gandhi is a way of life. According to Mahatma Gandhi, there is a transcendental "indefinable mysterious power that pervades everything", from the smallest particle of matter to the biggest form of life. From this speech we can see that Gandhi believed in God, the supreme power in the form of truth, life and light. This moral law governs that all life is God. God is truth. God is supreme-good. God is love. As many people do not believe in the existence of God, he tried to explain God by comparing it to faith. Faith is something that cannot be proven by human, we can only experience it. Thus, it is hard to believe in this just by applying reasons, it should be felt by heart. So by living faith, one will automatically accept the truth and love(God). None of us dare to deny truth, though people may have different conceptions about particular truth. Truth is a again a matter of experience. He strongly believes in the existence of God and he ask us to have faith in this. As a conclusion, I feel that one can get a deeper understanding into Gandhi’s philosophy of life and love through this speech.

The mediator between hands and mind must be the heart...Very Happy

It's good that you've found your faith in God, 'cause nowadays people don't believe anything they see beyond their own 2 eyes...
