Question
Comment on a book titled New Year's Message from Vice Chancellor University of Malaya in 1996.

Comment
Allahyarham Tan Sri Dato' Dr. Haji Abdullah Sanusi Ahmad was a former Vice Chancellor of University of Malaya and President of Open University of Malaysia (OUM). He obtained his first degree in Economics, Malay and Dutch Studies on 1960 and 1961 from University of Malaya Singapore (1960) and University of Malaya Kuala Lumpur (1961). Next, he obtained Certificate in Government and Development, Oxford University, United Kingdom (1967) and Certificate in Management Services, Royal Institute of Public Administration (London) (1968). After that, he was doing his master’s degree at Pittsburgh University, USA and Southern California University, USA. Finally, he finished his Doctor at Southern California University, USA. He died on 29 November 2003 because of heart attack.

After reading this New Year's Message from Vice Chancellor University of Malaya in 1996, we realize that it is really very complicated and difficult to organize or manage a big organization such as a university. It really needs the cooperation from all the staffs and students. Each of them plays a very important role. Through the message given by Allahyarham Tan Sri Dato' Dr. Haji Abdullah Sanusi Ahmad, it shows that he is a very good leader and critical thinker. He is able to point out all the important points that will help to improve our university. Besides, he has contributed a lot to our university by introducing new ideas, policies, program and so forth. All the ideas, policies and program are still applicable until now.

At the beginning of the message, Tan Sri has mentioned about the corporatization of all the local universities which is recommended by the government. Actually, we agree with the corporatization. It is because corporatization really gives a lot of freedom to the universities and allows some of their activities to be held more flexibly without the control from the government. However, a lot of effort and hard work are needed in order to corporatize a university. Besides, some sacrifices are needed from all the staffs and students. Therefore, Tan Sri has asked all the staffs to be prepared and work together in order to corporatize University of Malaya successfully

After that, Tan Sri has summarized all the improvement that has been done along the year 1995. For example, the new faculties and departments such as Faculty of Sport Science have been introduced. Furthermore, Tan Sri has mentioned about the semester and credit hour system. He also mentioned that University of Malaya is the last local university in applying semester system. It does not mean that University of Malaya is a poor university. In opposite, University of Malaya is a good and well planned university. It is because semester system is being discussed and considered deeply before it is being introduced. Therefore, all the weakness of this system can be minimized. Besides, Tan Sri has brought University of Malaya to the international level by creating International Relations Office which is under the chancellery.

Then, he talked about the democracy in education whereby for people who missed their chance of going to university can obtain a degree now through this new program. To realise this program, the university has set up a Department of Long Distance Learning. The purpose of this department is to enable students in other location to listen to the same lecture at the same time. This is truly a visionary move by the university and the broadcasting is done by a broadcasting centre at the Examination Building. As an engineering student, I am proud to say that the Faculty of Engineering is the first faculty to embrace such technologies. Other faculties were soon to follow. And with this technology in mind, long distance learning can be done more easily as it eliminates the distance factor from the set of difficulties faced on this type of learning.

The time when Tan Sri gave this speech is 1995. At that time the government decided that most courses are best finished in only three years. This situation now is of course different. But this shows that the university under the leadership of Tan Sri is fast in adopting government standards. Kudos to that! And ensure that the university stays on top of the game, the University of Malaya’s Learning Improvement Centre was established. The purpose of that department is to increase the competence of the staffs, especially academic staffs to ensure that they give quality lectures.

As for the infrastructure of University Malaya, a Development Master Plan is created to take care of all future infrastructure upgrades. As we all know, a good lecture or a good study environment sometimes depends on the infrastructures. Upgrading them means that we will be able to stay competitive with the infrastructures from other universities, especially private universities. And among all the plans to upgrade the infrastructures, a campus enhancement project is launched. The purpose of the project is to return greenery to the campus and as such, three trees will be planted for every tree chopped down.

Infrastructure aside, the computer network system is established under the Super Communication Highway which connects all the faculties, centres, academies, and administration blocks. It is advancement in internet connectivity that allows us to use features like the university email and the wireless internet connection that we enjoy till today. I got to say, as a college resident, I’m grateful of what Tan Sri has done because all college residents have free and fast wireless internet to use now.

After all the talk on infrastructure advancement, Tan Sri decided to touch on the work culture that makes a university ticks. He argues that the staffs should be committed to their work to ensure the advancement of the university. In order to achieve that, the staffs must communicate and have their own work culture within different departments and levels. This is evident now; although our university has fallen out of the Top 200 universities before, but thanks to the concept implemented by Tan Sri, we are finally backed on track.

Lucky for us all, all the work ethic concepts that he wanted the university to practise is published out for us students to learn something from it. Tan Sri suggests that good work ethics stem from professionalism, integrity, works of quality, hardworking, and honesty.

As for professionalism, Tan Sri thinks that no matter what position we hold in the university, we must be professional. That means that we must know what we are doing from time to time with rules and regulations in our minds. Then, we can produce great work from it.

As for integrity, Tan Sri thinks that we must be honest in whatever that we do for an organisation or otherwise. Because honesty at work in the university means that we have placed the university above our own selfish desires. Besides, integrity in the university also means intellectual honesty, which means that the administration of the university must be honest when dealing with the various projects of the university.

As for works of quality, Tan Sri thinks that all work should satisfy the client and presented on time with the minimum cost possible. This is why we should always find ways to improve our work. And if it’s possible, we must try our very best to do things right at the first time, all the time.

As for being hardworking, Tan Sri thinks that we should do just a bit more than what our job description prescribes. This is synonymous with what the prime minister of that time says about being hardworking, he said, and I quote: “we must do more than our job descriptions sincerely and extend our working hours willingly”.

As for being honest, Tan Sri thinks that we have an obligation to work as a team and we must be honest in what we do. He says so because our strength comes from great teamwork and hence honesty in our work progress and what not is crucial to a team’s progress. Above all, we must not blame any of our teammates if a failure occurs. This is important to maintain the unity of a team.

Finally, Tan Sri hopes that the students and the staffs can absorb all the values presented by him for the wellbeing of University Malaya. Furthermore, Tan Sri exhibits Convergent Thinking, which the kind of thinking that processes information around a common point and attempt to bring them all into a common conclusion. This is evident when he talks about the various advancement and changes of our beloved university. Most importantly, he calls out to the staffs for new work ethics and integrative team work. With that in mind, his hope that our university will achieve greatness one day can be done.
