Computer Engineering 08/09 :: Thinking and Communication Skills - KXEX2163 :: Assignment 1 - Write about yourself critically; definition of thinking and types of thinking
Page 1 of 1
Leong Jia Wei KEW080013
1. Write about yourself and your ambitions critically.
My name is Leong Jia Wei. Yes, I could have talked about something else since my name was written above but this is how I wanted to start an essay of self-introduction. I was born on the 25th of September, 1988 in Ipoh, Perak as the eldest son in a family of four.
I attended SRJK(C)Sam Tet for both standard one and two. Then, I spend the rest of my primary school years in SJK(C) Bercham because I’m lazy! For the uninitiated, Sam Tet is one of those schools that are filled with hard working teachers. My parents made the transfer decision because both my parents and I agreed that survival is slim in such a hard working environment when my laziness is still intact. Fortunately, the teachers in Bercham are only a bit more hard working then I am, hence in a cosy cove of laziness, I have managed to scrap through primary school.
Then, I spend a whopping eight years in SMK Jalan Tasek (Form Six included). Honestly, secondary school is a journey of self-realization for me as I opt for a normal study-and-play life. This is where I realize that I have an affinity for racket and electronic sports. I also have a passion for reading novels that deals with the occult. Furthermore, I love quality movies and almost any kinds of music. In the end, I find that I’m more passionate about computers. There’s almost nothing about computers that bored me, I like everything from programming to hardware overclocking.
Currently, I’m pursuing Computer Engineering in this university. The purpose of computer engineers is to fill the knowledge and technical gap between Software and Electrical Engineers. So naturally, our job prospects are within these two disciplines. Unfortunately, I still don’t have a clear idea about where I should be heading since working on either the hardware or the software side of a computer sounds equally exciting and at the same time challenging.
If I work on the software side of a computer, I will need to make sure that I learn several prominent programming languages by heart, as they are the tools required to build any software. I might also need to think logically and critically to create algorithms that make efficient and fast software routines. Hence, a route in the software industry means that I may get to write operating system simulators or computer game engines.
If I work on the hardware side of a computer, I will need to make sure that all the theory and practical that I learn and do are at my fingertips. Hence, a route in the computer hardware industry means that I might get to design the hardware for various types of computer systems or to facilitate the communication between hardware and software.
Being in either the software or hardware industry still doesn’t change the fact that I need to pursue lifelong learning as an engineer. Until I can decide which path that I need to follow, I’ll try my best to get the most out of my university life and at the same time keep my laziness at bay!
2. Find the definition and types of “thinking”. See how those types of thinking actually fit you, now and future.
Thinking is a representative reaction towards stimuli from internal chemical reactions or external environmental factors. Normally, the word thinking covers numerous diverse psychological activities which include ways of reasoning, judgement and problem solving.

The different types of thinking are as below:
• Critical Thinking
This is convergent thinking. It assesses the worth and validity of something existent. It involves precise, persistent, objective analysis.
• Creative Thinking
This is divergent thinking. It generates something new or different. It involves having a different idea that works as well or better than previous ideas.
• Convergent Thinking
This type of thinking is cognitive processing of information around a common point, an attempt to bring thoughts from different directions into a union or common conclusion.
• Divergent Thinking
This type of thinking starts from a common point and moves outward into a variety of perspectives.
• Inductive Thinking
This is the process of reasoning from parts to the whole, from examples to generalizations.
• Deductive Thinking
This type of reasoning moves from the whole to its parts, from generalizations to underlying concepts to examples.

While considering all the different types of thinking, I realised that I have used more than one type of thinking in solving real life problems. And if I would need to choose one type of thinking that fits me I think it would be inductive thinking, although sometimes I think divergently.
I choose inductive thinking because most of the time, I will observe a situation or problem at hand, detect patterns and regularities, and work my way to broader generalizations. Obviously, I am a person who does things using the bottom-up approach.
The reason I say that my inductive thinking comes with a hint of divergent thinking because I am a freedom lover; I love to “fly”, even when I’m thinking! I am not fond of my thoughts being bounded in any form. I prefer it random and unorganized. Hence, when thinking about a certain situation or problem, I like to consider it from multiple perspectives. And at times when I am tired of “flying”, I would compile what I have to hopefully find the best solution.
Right now, I am aware that the way I think causes problems in real life. I am saying so because my thinking is sometimes unfocused. In some cases where lots of viable options are present, for most of the time, the best option is available. But I tend to add in my own thoughts and solutions into the mix, hence blurring the lines between what can be done and what should be done. Hence, with all the connections at hand, I must learn how to organize and structure all my ideas using convergent thinking to ultimately find the best solution.
I realised that the way I think now may help me in finding solutions to various engineering problems in the future. Engineering problems in real life are tough. Most of the time, a solution is readily available. But we as engineers must always consider the cost factor when trying to find a solution. Both divergent and inductive thinking will help me to look into the solution from multiple perspectives, modify the ideas to suit the problem at hand and finally create the most viable and cost effective solution.

As a Sam Tet student for 12 years, i am not quite agree with what you mention because there do have some lazy teachers who don't like to come to class and so on.

Alright, I admit, to judge the teachers in two years time frame is insufficient

from my opinion, i think you should go for hardware XD
Only hardware can lift the performance to another higher level, softwares can do as well.. but only optimization..

Well.. you can specialized in both since you're a computer engineer and you should be proud of it! A system needs a good hardware to perform better but on the other hand, a good hardware needs a good software program to fully unleash its potential

Well, I think we can really squeeze a lot of performance out of today's hardware, given that programmers ONLY programmed in Assembly, which takes every single CPU cycle into account XD!

Yeah, but since today's hardware is so fast, people rarely optimize their software...

Both software and hardware has its own temptations. But nowadays most of the computer engineers deal more with the software part rather than hardware. It is a good thing to have both of this knowledge because it makes our field of study even bigger by not just focusing on one part.I think we take a really good course..

Well, actually I would like to design some computer peripherals' circuits BUT yeah, we're a lucky bunch to be able to study both hard/soft-wares XD!
