Comment on slides entitled “Ethnic and Religious Pluralism: An Islamic Perspective”:


We agreed that this issue is important to human being because, even though we stick to our own religion but we can accept others religious without losing our beliefs. For example, we can see recently, there are few churches that have been burn down or violate by someone. Although we do not know who’s behind all these, but from what they have done, we can concluded that, they do not open their mind to accept Christianity. They try to destroyed others place or worship just because they proud and defends of their religion and think that others are wrong.

From Islamic theology of pluralism, it stated that “From the one we have the many; from the many we are brought back to the one; from unity to multiplicity; to multiplicity back to unity”. Here, it shows that Islam see a pluralism as a unity. Looking back to the centuries, even in the war, Muslim has been prohibited to destroy place of worship, to kill children, women, and old citizen .They went for war not based on revenge to others religious or personal matters but it is for Jihad. It means that, pluralism has been practice in Islam a long time ago.

The quoted Qur’anic said that “We created you from a single(pair) of a male and female, and made you into nations and tribes that you may know each other.”We understand that it not wrong to have a relationship between men and women, but we have to remind that this relationship cannot just base on lust. There are boundaries between this two opposite sex. So, do not misuse this quoted to satisfy your desire.


Intra-Islamic religious pluralism: there is diversity and unity within Islam. When Islam was at its best there was creative interaction among the different schools of thought. Same as we do a group work. When we share an idea from each individual without bias, we can get a new great idea and sometime it will be more creative than we may think.


In conclusion, there are people out there thinking pluralism religion is something wrong, but it was not, because Islam also taught us that pluralism is the key of unity. So we have to eliminate bias in ourselves and suspicion by strive to have more meaningful dialogues with others religious and promote better inter-ethnic and inter-religious relation.





Comment on book entitled “Perutusan Tahun Baru Naib Canselor 2003” :



This book represents the vice chancellors new year message during 2003.By reading this book, we have obtain a clear view on the effort, contribution and steps need to be taken in order to produce excellent university with continuous improvement. He reminded all the parties involved in University Malaya improvement including staff, students, lecturers and administrators on what kind of thinking and attitude that we need to have to achieve our expectation of becoming the most prestigious university in Malaysia. No one has exception on this.

He has set our mind to be such a respectful person regardless our status or position. We could not agree more with his powerful sentences which goes like "Respect cannot be demanded but is obtained through worthy contribution and good example". From here we can see how inappropriate it is for us to have the culture of "boss and labourer " in this university because we know it will finally end up with uncomfortable environment which may lead to the fall of our university. Each of his sentences has the ability to make people realize the importance of unity between different races, cooperation and appreciation of others who revolve around us. We must allow ourselves to be open minded by listening to every complaint, comments or suggestions from anyone, even though it may seems irrelevant or less important for us. Because tiny different may result in big change.

He uses a lot of Malaysia saying to support his idea which we feel is such a good approach because it enables us to see the real relation on what he tries to emphasize and also to boost up our sense of unity among others. Of course all of us are proud to be in the university which has obtained MS ISO 9001:2000 certificates. To maintain this, it is up to us to give our full commitment. Prejudices or biases among each other should be avoided in order to strengthen the spirit of collaboration so all of us will be able to work, study, and interact with each other peacefully.

He also urges all the parties to carry out duties according to the guide line that has already been set and make it a tradition, to create our very own University of Malaya trademark. He never fails to stress on the value of cooperation and collaboration among the university community. These two are very important aspects in overcoming the weakness in administration and management to create more effective services and practice good university governance. He realizes that he or anyone can not give out the best services by just being one man army. Overall, he is hoping that all parties at all level to overcome the negativity and work together without just fault-finding towards the success of the university.

We can see that he should be someone who reads a lot. He makes the speech more interesting by including meaningful life principles and terms. For example, the usage of the term kaizen, this Japanese word means constant and never-ending improvement. This is one of important that everyone should apply in our daily life. According to him, to ensure a better management of ours, we should be prepared to learn from others, learn from mistakes and strive for continuous improvement. This show how concerned and responsible is he as a vise chancellor in providing the best services for the clients especially the students.

Last but not least , he is a goal orientated person and a far thinker who believes that University of Malaya will achieve greater success in future. In order to bring his dreams into realization, he has his own targets to be focused and to bring achievements to the university. And he too wants that all the university community have the same spirit because strength is a source of success. Over and over again he mentioned about the unity and cooperation of university community.

A very useful book for us to read because after reading and understanding his messages, he has the power to actually instill the good value inside of us. We can see all his contribution and supports through Nadi programmes and University of Malaya Center for Family Development (UMCFD) has major effect in University’s Malaya achievement especially to reduce prejudices among others and to raise level fitness and health of our community. It shows here his role as a magnificent leader who manages to achieve his expectation by various effective programmes. Now , it is our responsibility to continue his great work for the success and development of university. Each of us should play our part with integrity and full commitment to ensure the vision of our beloved university is fulfils.
